A Notes list is free, fast and already on your phone, and for a trip you know well it can be all you need. Neatly Packed is built for the rest: it starts with a list made for this trip, with the right amount of each item worked out from your nights, weather and plans. It has a free version to start, and Premium is a one-time $4.99 (as of October 2026).

We will use Apple’s Notes as the example, because its own support pages are easy to check. Other notes apps work in similar ways, so check yours.

When does a packing app earn its place over a blank note?

When the trip is new, or the numbers matter. A blank note starts empty every time. You supply the memory, the counts and the plug adapter, which is fine when you have packed for this exact trip ten times.

Neatly Packed starts from the other end. You tell it the place, your nights, the weather and your plans, and the list is already built, with every count worked out. With Premium, laundry or a light packing style brings the numbers down, and the reason shows under each one.

For a short or familiar trip, a Notes list is honestly enough, and we say so in the verdict below. Apple’s steps are simple: open Notes, tap the compose button, enter a title, tap return, then tap the checklist button. Each time you tap return, a new item is added, and you tap the circle to tick it off.

Myth or fact: what do people say about packing lists?

Here are some common beliefs, and what is true. None of them is meant as a dig at Notes.

“I will remember the plug.” Myth, for new places. Neatly Packed picks up local tips for 58 destinations and shows the plug type and voltage, with the adapter put on your list. Lisbon, for example, brings shoes with real grip and a Type C/F adapter. In a blank note, you add those yourself.

“A Notes list works out the quantities.” Fact, but only what you type. You decide how many T-shirts. A common rule is one more than your nights for underwear, socks and T-shirts, which is what the free Neatly Packed list uses, up to seven. So five nights means six. You can use the same rule in a note. See our guide to how many outfits to pack for a week.

“The forecast changes nothing.” Myth. If you tap “Check the weather”, Neatly Packed fetches a live forecast for about nine days ahead, and if rain is coming it offers to add a rain jacket or an umbrella. Items join your list when you tap them. Further out, you pick the weather you expect.

“A list from last time is still right.” It depends. A copy of an old note is a good start, but it does not know this trip is five nights instead of three, or that the country uses a different plug. With Premium you can start a new trip from one you packed before, and an after-trip review notes what you forgot.

“You need a connection to use a packing app.” Myth. Your Neatly Packed trip lives on your phone, so the list works without one. The forecast needs a connection once and is then stored with the trip.

“You cannot share a packing list.” Myth, for both. Apple lets you share a note with others, and Neatly Packed lets you share or export a list as text. Live editing together is a strength of Notes, as the next sections show.

How do Neatly Packed and a Notes list compare, side by side?

Here are the things most packers weigh. A tick means we could confirm it on Apple’s pages or on our own site.

Where is a Notes list stronger?

In some real ways.

  • It is free and already there. No download, no setup, no price.
  • Live sharing. Apple says up to 100 people can collaborate on a note, and everyone needs to be signed in to their Apple Account. On iOS or iPadOS 26 or earlier, collaborators need an Apple device too, and a locked note cannot be collaborated on.
  • It does everything. The same app holds your shopping list and your dinner plans, and you can tick, reorder and move ticked items to the bottom.
  • Complete freedom. For a weekend at your mother’s house, a list you have refined over years may suit you more than anything an app suggests.

The small things, like the charger and the adapter, are what a blank note can forget.

Neither end is wrong. A blank page is perfect when you already know the trip.

Choose Neatly Packed if

  • You do not want to start from a blank note.
  • You want the counts worked out from your nights, with the reason shown.
  • You want tips, plug adapters and flying rules for the place.
  • You want a countdown, a reminder and your documents and bookings kept with the list.
  • You want a forecast you fetch yourself that offers items rather than pushing them on you.

Choose a Notes list if

  • It is a short or familiar trip and you already know what goes in the bag.
  • You want everyone to see and edit the same list, live.

You can also do both. A Neatly Packed list can be shared or exported as text, so you can paste it into a shared note and let the family see it. For the liquids part of the bag, our guide to the toiletry bag and liquids works with either, and our guide on what to pack for Jamaica shows the kind of local tips Neatly Packed brings.

How can you tell in five minutes?

Try this on your next trip.

  1. Write your usual list in a note, from memory, without looking at anything.
  2. Ask: how many T-shirts, and why that number?
  3. Ask: what does this place need that I have not thought of, such as a plug adapter or the right shoes?
  4. Build the same trip in Neatly Packed and compare the two lists.
  5. Notice what the app suggested that you had forgotten, and what you had that it did not.

If the lists match, a Notes list is doing its job and you can stay with it. If the app surprised you, it has earned a place in your routine.

Notes lists and packing apps: your questions

Is a Notes app good enough for a packing list?

For simple or familiar trips, yes. A checklist lets you tick things off, reorder them and share the note. For a new place, or a trip where counts matter, Neatly Packed starts with a list built for you, with the counts worked out.

How do I work out how many clothes to pack?

A common rule is one more than your nights for underwear, socks and T-shirts. That is what the free Neatly Packed list uses, up to seven. Laundry or a light packing style can reduce it, and Premium shows the reason under each count.

How do I make a packing checklist in Notes?

On iPhone, open Notes, tap the compose button, enter a title and tap return, then tap the checklist button. Each time you tap return a new item is added, and you tap the circle to tick it off. Those are Apple’s own steps, read in October 2026.

Can I share a packing list with my family?

In Neatly Packed you can share or export a list as text. In Apple Notes you can share a note live, if everyone is signed in to their Apple Account (on iOS or iPadOS 26 or earlier, collaborators need an Apple device).

Do packing apps work offline?

Neatly Packed keeps your trip on your phone, so the list works without a connection. The forecast needs a connection once and is then stored.

Should I keep one master list?

It helps. With Neatly Packed Premium you can start a new trip from one you packed before, and an after-trip review notes what you forgot.
