Four suitcases of different sizes lined up by a front door in soft morning light

Neatly Packed is one calm packing list on your phone, with the counts worked out from the place, your nights, the weather and your plans. It is a one-time $4.99 with no account (as of October 2026), and it has tips for 58 destinations. Packr builds a list too, and its edge is sharing: companions can follow the same trip on their own phones.

So the question is not which app is cleverer. It is who is packing, and on how many phones.

Who is packing, and on how many phones?

Here are four examples of people who pack very differently (they are examples, not real people). See which one sounds like you.

The organiser

One person packs for everyone: the passports, the chargers, the swimming costumes. Everyone else just turns up. This person wants one list with counts for each traveller, not four people to chase. That is what Neatly Packed Premium is for: add each traveller with a name and an avatar, the counts grow for everyone, and shared things like the plug adapter stay as one.

The solo traveller

Nobody to share with. The question is how many of everything, whether it fits, and what the place needs. One private list on your phone, with a suitcase meter and the plug adapter put on the list, fits naturally.

The couple

Two people, two bags, a few shared things like the adapter and the sunscreen. If one of you is the planner, one calm list is enough. Our honeymoon packing list is a good example of a trip for two.

The family that shares the job

Each person is old enough to pack their own bag and wants to follow along. Here Packr makes real sense: each person ticks off their own items and everyone sees the list update. If that is your family, Packr is built for it.

With a family, the question is rarely what to pack. It is who is packing what.

What is Neatly Packed built for?

For the person who wants the packing worked out, kept private, and paid for once.

The free list counts from your nights. With Premium, the counts are tuned to laundry and packing style and show their reason, so you can see why it says six T-shirts and not nine. Pick a place and the list picks up local tips and the right plug adapter.

Your trip keeps your documents (encrypted on your phone), your bookings (added by you), a plain guide to flying rules, emergency numbers and phrases, a countdown and a reminder the day before. A suitcase meter shows how packed your bag is, so you know before you zip it whether it should fit. Nothing needs an account, and you can back up, export or delete everything yourself.

How do Neatly Packed and Packr compare, side by side?

Here are the things most packers weigh. Both apps are free to start, and a tick means we could confirm it on the app’s own pages.

On the forecast: Neatly Packed’s is opt-in. You tap “Check the weather” and it fetches a live forecast for about nine days ahead from MET Norway’s weather service, sending the place’s coordinates, not your own location. If rain is coming, it offers to add a rain jacket or an umbrella, and they join your list when you tap them. The forecast is saved on the trip, so you can still read it without a connection. For a hot, showery trip, our Caribbean island packing list shows what that tends to look like.

Where is Packr stronger?

In a few real ways.

  • Live sharing. Packr’s website says you can send a trip to a partner, friend or family member, and they tick items off on their own phone while everyone sees the same list update. Neatly Packed cannot do that.
  • Family and pet lists. Its website lists a Premium family mode for packing for several travellers, and its App Store text says even pets can have their own packing list.
  • A generous free version. Its site says the free version covers unlimited trips and items, and the US App Store showed 4.6 out of 5 from 7.1K ratings when we read it on 21 October 2026.
  • iPad, ready-made lists and TripIt. It runs on iPad, has ready-made lists for 25 or more activities, and Premium connects to TripIt.

Neither end is better. It depends on whether one person carries the plan or the whole group does.

Choose Neatly Packed if

  • You are the one organiser, and you want one calm list for the whole group.
  • You want to pay once, not monthly, and you want no account.
  • You want tips and plug adapters for 58 destinations, and counts that show their reason.
  • You want documents, bookings, flying rules and emergency numbers kept with the trip.
  • You want a forecast you fetch yourself, that offers items rather than pushing them on you.

Choose Packr if

  • You want everyone to tick off their own items and see the list update.
  • You are packing for a family with a list per person, or for pets.

If you are not sure which packer you are, think about the last trip. Did you end up carrying everyone’s things in your head? Then one calm list with the counts worked out for the group will probably feel like a relief. Did three people each forget their own charger? Then a list each of them can see may be what the trip needed. Both are free to start, so try one on a real weekend away.
